Shanghai Nights : The Singing Ringing Tree (revisited)
I do not normally re-post my images, but several people have written to ask why I called this photograph The Singing Ringing Tree. So, here is the answer …
I remember when I was a boy watching an East German film, developed into a television series, called The Singing Ringing Tree. It was mesmerizing, sinister, beautiful, magical and horrifying all at once. Imagine a fairy tale conceived by Wagner and directed by Fritz Lang, with nods in the direction of The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari and German expressionism, and you’d be close.
Whenever I stand on Zha-Pu Road Bridge and look at this view of Suzhou Creek and the skyline beyond, I am reminded of The Singing Ringing Tree.
There you have it :-)
